How to Create an Awesome (and Legal!) Pin

November 17, 2015

Pin trading is one of the most popular activities at Destination Imagination tournaments. When you create a pin for your team, your region or your Affiliate, it’s important to be creative and original.

Start by drawing your own design. It could be something unique to your team, a favorite prop, a character from your Team Challenge solution, something special about your town or school, a play on words, or a design based on your team name. The possibilities are endless! This is a chance for you and your team members to use your imagination and showcase your creativity and originality. When creating your pin, try to keep it bright and colorful. Maybe even add a glitter color, because everyone loves a little sparkle.

In addition to being creative, it’s important to follow a few copyright guidelines to make sure you’re not infringing on another person’s or company’s work. To help you in this area, we’ve put together a few copyright guidelines below.

Copyright Info

When you create something, aren’t you proud of the time and hard work you put into making it? You’ve created something original and would most likely be upset if someone copied your work without your permission. That’s where copyright law comes in. Copyright protects “original works of authorship” and spans a variety of areas ranging from movie characters to literary works to company logos.

Before creating a pin for your Destination Imagination tournament, we ask that you follow these guidelines to make sure you’re not infringing on a person or company’s intellectual property:

  • We do not condone pins that include the likeness or emulation of any trademarked or copyrighted material including, but not limited to, parodies of copyrighted characters.
  • Pin Vendors: Destination Imagination, Inc. has approved pin vendors that work with many of our Affiliates. To find out who your pin vendor is, contact your Affiliate Director. You can view a list of our Affiliates here.
  • DI Trademarks & Logos: Only approved pin vendors that have a signed Vendor’s License Agreement with Destination Imagination, Inc. are permitted to use the following marks: Destination Imagination®, the Box and Ball logo, projectOUTREACH®, Rising Stars® and the annual Team Challenge logos.
  • Global Finals Logo: No pin manufacturer or designer (i.e., DI teams, Team Managers or volunteers) is permitted to use the Global Finals logo on pins or any other commercial merchandise, such as apparel.

If you have any questions regarding your pin design, we ask that you contact your pin vendor directly. For questions regarding Destination Imagination copyright and logo usage, contact us at [email protected].

Happy designing, teams!
